Relationship between river size and nutrient removal

چکیده
[1] We present a conceptual approach for evaluating the biological and hydrological controls of nutrient removal in different sized rivers within an entire river network. We emphasize a per unit area biological parameter, the nutrient uptake velocity (nf), which is mathematically independent of river size in benthic dominated systems. Standardization of biological parameters from previous river network models to nf reveals the nature of river size dependant biological activity in these models. We explore how geomorphic, hydraulic, and biological factors control the distribution of nutrient removal in an idealized river network, finding that larger rivers within a basin potentially exert considerable influence over nutrient exports. Are rivers just big streams? A pulse method to quantify nitrogen demand in a large river.
Given recent focus on large rivers as conduits for excess nutrients to coastal zones, their role in processing and retaining nutrients has been overlooked and understudied. Empirical measurements of nutrient uptake in large rivers are lacking, despite a substantial body of knowledge on nutrient transport and removal in smaller streams. Researchers interested in nutrient transport by rivers (dis...

Monthly sampling campaigns were carried out between February 2010 and January 2011 to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of nutrients (ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved organic nitrogen, phosphate, dissolved organic phosphorus and silicate) and chlorophyll-a along a salinity gradient in the tropical Cachoeira River estuary, subject to the untreated effluents of a sewage treatmen...
متن کاملPotamoplankton size structure and taxonomic composition: Influence of river size and nutrient concentrations
We measured the size structure and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton in temperate rivers during base flows of summer to investigate the influence of river size, ambient nutrient concentration, and light availability on potamoplankton community structure. Algal biomass was measured in three size classes (2–20, 20–64, and .64 mm) by microscope enumeration of water samples collected in 31 riv...
متن کاملWarming increases nutrient mobilization and gaseous nitrogen removal from sediments across cascade reservoirs.
Increases in water temperature, as a result of climate change, may influence biogeochemical cycles, sediment-water fluxes and consequently environmental sustainability. Effects of rising temperature on dynamics of nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and gaseous nitrogen (N2 and N2O) were examined in ...
متن کاملWater Quality Modeling and Evaluation of Nutrient Control Strategies Using QUAL2K in the Small Rivers
Background: Qual2k is a stream water quality model and was used to evaluate the water quality of the Kine-Vars River and assess the response of the river to nutrient management strategies. Methods: For that purpose, 7 sample stations were selected and surface water samples were collected in the winter and summer of 2012 and were analyzed for temperature, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen dem...
